Taking Care of the Club House

Mel&mediansinNY

Melissa is the Club Manager of the popular Clubhouse. It was voted “The best comedy club in town” by the San Francisco Chronicle as well as receiving San Francisco Magazine’s and 7×7 Magazine’s Best of the Bay Area 2009. The fact that you can BYOB is probably the selling point of this mega popular club, but I’d like to say my friend Melissa deserves the bulk of the credit!

How did you become the Club Manager of the Clubhouse?
I’ve been involved with the San Francisco Comedy College (SFCC) since its inception in 1999. I was already marketing the shows and classes there when the CEO Kurtis Matthews decided to open a second, larger performance space at 414 Mason Street. We had been selling out our weekend showcases in the 7th floor theater space (which seats 60), so when the larger space on the 5th floor became available, the position of Club Manager was offered to me.

Who are the most popular comedians?
San Francisco has several comedians who have built a following. Two of the most popular comedians in town who trained at the SFCC are Ali Mafi and Reggie Steele. A few more comedians who have built a following in San Francisco are Ali Wong, Will Franken, Marga Gomez and Brent Weinbach.

Your most favorable guest?
My favorite audiences are the really enthusiastic comedy fans who keep coming back and bringing more friends each time. Generally, people who are polite, stay fairly sober and do not heckle are the best.

What are the biggest challenge/s in being a Club Manager?
My biggest challenges are filling the seats every day and dealing with drunk or crazy people once in a while.

Who are some future guests/comedians slated for 2009/2010?
We’re have Hasan Minhaj slated for Thanksgiving weekend and Joe Klocek headlining our annual New Year’s Eve show, which also features Ali Wong. Last year, our Valentine’s Day weekend was our busiest ever, so I hope to break our record!

The Usuals…

Why do you do what you do?
I love comedy and I enjoy working with funny people.

What makes you want to wake up in the morning?
Knowing that I will have some really good coffee soon. Usually, I have several to-do lists that motivate me.

Who is your inspiration?
I get inspired by many women, including my mom. She taught me to work hard and enjoy life.

If you were given the chance to relive your life all over again, who would you be?
Probably someone else.

What is your favorite indulgence?
Vietnamese food.

Your three rules to live by?
Try anything once.
Attitude is everything.
Acceptance is the first step to change.

Your favorite brand or jewelry item?
I like H&M and Target.

Your city/country of origin?
Skokie, Illinois

Your proudest accomplishment?
I’ve made people laugh and brought joy into the world.

I took the ferry to Sausalito from San Francisco and would recommend taking out of town guests for the ride as well. It’s an absolute must.

The day was typical Bay Area weather-lots of sun, cool breeze and a relaxing atmosphere.

The ride is approximately 18 minutes, one way. Cost of the ride varies.

Loló

Loló

lolo-31

Tucked in a popular San Francisco neighborhood is Restaurant Lolo. Lolo is one of the most name-dropped restaurants among my friends (I have yet to try their cuisine), but the decor, ambiance and the delicious food seems to be a favorite among my peeps. Read my interview below…

Why Loló?
Loló more than anything stems from a great friendship. My partner, Jorge Martinez and I just wanted to do something together. Jorge had been in the restaurant business for many years successfully running Olé Madrid in San Diego as well as i Latina and Anita Li restaurants in Guadalajara. I was coming full circle back into the restaurant business; it had been my family business back in Turkey. We thought that it would be an interesting idea to bring together the culinary traditions of Mexico and Turkey.

f

The three most requested dishes at Loló are:
1. Taco Tropical
2. Octopus Tiradito
3. Heirloom Salad with Feta Mousse

The Usuals…

Why do you do what you do?
It’s seems that it’s in my blood. I tried doing everything else really. Since I grew up in this business I tried to get as far away from it as possible. Somehow I never stopped cooking and now that I am back in it I could not be happier. I catch myself coming home after a 16 hour day with a big grin on my face. Most of what I remember fondly from my childhood is connected to food. It’s my connection to my past.

What makes you want to wake up in the morning?
It’s pretty easy for me. I like that small sense of accomplishment you get from getting things done. I like to keep busy.

Who is your inspiration?
My business partner, Jorge Martinez. He’s somehow managed to keep a balance between a happy family life and this very taxing business.

If you were given the chance to relive your life all over again, who would you be?
I’m pretty happy with the way things are.

What is your favorite Lolo dish?
Venison Carpaccio

Your three rules to live by?
I never thought of these as rules and I certainly have more than three but it’s important for me to have empathy, to throw myself into things I don’t necessarily feel comfortable with and to remember that there’s nothing new under the sun.

Your must-have Turkish meal?
Whole roasted fish that I just caught.

Your city/country of origin?
Bodrum, Turkey.

Your proudest accomplishment?
My many friends in all sorts of places.

Bus To Chinatown: San Francisco

gate
San Francisco’s Chinatown is one of the top tourist attractions in the states and a mega-fun place to shop. I take the bus to the gates of CTown whenever I have out-of-town guests. You can pretty much find everything under the sun in this ‘hood…I can spend the entire day tasting dimsum, munching on coconut pastry, shopping for anything San Francisco, etc.,

pecking
Peking Bazaar – all the trinkets you can possibly buy

duck
Columbus street is loaded with eateries selling roasted duck for under $10

dolsim
Dol Ho Restaurant – cheap dim sum for under five bucks…this place is really low-rent but makes up for it with the best greasy food…

fish
I get live crab here…

herb
An array of herbs to choose from…

shoes
Japanese geta and zori….

umberlla
The selections are endless…

Irish Bar Signs

Irish Bar Signs

I love signs…and have a tendency to snap pictures of it everywhere I go. These picture were taken during the daytime at the Irish Bank Bar & Restaurant in San Francisco. The Irish Bank Bar  is one of my favorite and a great place to hang out after work. Located smack in the middle of downtown the joint offers flavorful appetizers and good selection of beer…and it’s a great place to meet cute boys as well (I thought I’ll add that note for all my single girlfriends out there)!!!

Chinese Food Delivery

Chinese Food Delivery

I satisfy my Chinese food craving with a monthly trip to U-Lee. They do not deliver but you can call in advance and pick up the food. I’ve been eating at this place for over a decade—and NOTHING compares to it. The same family had owed the place and I only know the owners by the name Ken and Judie. I love it when they recognize my face when I walk in…yeah, there’s  nothing like getting a five-star treatment at a hole-in-the-wall eatery…total bliss!

I order the same three entrees every time I’m at U-Lee. They serve the best Fried Chicken, Pot Stickers and Mongolian Beef. I pair it with Tsingtao. This joint gets the Diiver Hall of Fame.

sauce
Fried Chicken…goes really well with the sauce…

mongobeef
The best pot-stickers in San Francisco!

mbeef
The combination of the mongolian beef with the fried wonton noodles is mouth-watering!
